8/3/15 3:30pm: I’m glad I’m doing this bag over. My intent was to get Caron Simply Soft in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, and black, and that would have cost around 45.00, but I saw the Lion Brand Landscapes multis and I was sold.
I made the handles and remembered that I had some fuschia eyelash yarn, so I threaded it through the tubes and used the cable ties to close the tubes (instructions for the handles: http://jezzeblog.blogspot.com/2009/05/handles_22.html?spr...). I like shoulder bags, so I made my handles a little bigger.
I love the blue/teal/purple/gold fabric I got for the lining. I’m going to make the bag first before I tackle the lining (note to self: remember to make pockets). Here goes!
Update (3 hours later): This yarn is glorious! It’s a roving yarn rather than a ply yarn. It’s smooth, and the colors are gorgeous. I’m glad the color changes are subtle and the self striping is evident. I’m only using one strand throughout, as this yarn is listed as #4 medium weight. I’m already on row 17, measuring at 17.5” (44.5 cm). I don’t think I’m going to use the fuschia anymore, and I’m going to use the black for the sc rows. I hate that my center looks a little crooked, but oh well, I’m not frogging it again. So far so good.
Update 11:39 pm: I’m really thrown off by the off center black square, so at 60 cm(ish), I’m blocking it. I ended up with 24 rows. Maybe if I had a size E hook, I could get in 30 rows, but I’m happy with where it is. I don’t know how square it’ll get, being that it’s 100% acrylic. I want to carry it tomorrow evening, so I have a little bit of work to do tomorrow (make pockets in the lining, sew in the lining, sc the sides and mouth, and connect the handles. If I pull this off, I can practically make one of these in a day! It would either be in a solid color, or multicolored yarn. I’ve only had to tie off the joins of a new ball. No tying off every row, which is a pain.
8/6/15: Finished! It was a quick project, very satisfying. I think I want to make a solid white one for winter. I had to reposition the cable ties so that they weren’t sticking up through the “mouth” sides. I ended up doing 13 rows for the mouth sides as well, so they would fit over the handles. As everyone else stated, it’s so much easier to sew the lining before working the sides. I also sewed the lining on with my sewing machine, instead of hand sewing it. I will also scotch-guard the bottom for protection. I used Velcro dots for closures.
