This was a preview knit/ test for Elizabeth Smith, my first one for this designer. Elizabeth has classic and well explained patterns, so also this one, which was a pleasure to knit.
I’m impressed by how thoughtful all is explained, both in the pattern and on the designer’s tips page (on her website). There are a lot of tips for all techniques used, including jogless one row stripes, how to measure correctly, and how to pick up stitches for a perfect V-neck.
The shaping of body and sleeves is also beautifully done.
I highly would recommand this pattern.
I held two strands together for this sweater, which gives a light and cozy result.
Size worked:
Size 4, straight version.
Pattern gauge:
20 sts/ 29 rows with main needle.
My sweater in progress gauge:
20.5 sts/ 29 rows measured unwashed in yoke. Armhole measurements are spot on before separating body and sleeves. The shape should stay the same after washing, since this yarn combination don’t grow afterwards.
My swatch gauge - unwashed - with needle 4.0 mm (main needle):
19 sts/ 28 rows.
My swatch gauge - washed and blocked - with needle 4.0 mm (main needle):
20 sts/ 26 rows. (Row gauge on my sweater is tighter than my swatch.)
Important when blocking: Don’t stretch when blocking. Check gauge.
My final sweater gauge and measurements, unwashed, measured on body, with main needles 4.0 mm:
20 sts and 28 rows/rnds = 10 cm
A bust circumference 112 cm
B back width at bust 56 cm
D armhole depth 22 cm
E V-neck depth 18 cm
F Back neck width 20 cm
G upperarm circumference 38 cm
H wrist circumference 23 cm
I sleeve length 48 cm
J underarm to hem front 32 cm
K underarm to hem back 34.5 cm
L total length 60 cm
My final sweater gauge and measurements, washed (and then laid flat to dry, not blocked) and dry, measured on body, with main needles 4.0 mm:
20 sts and 28 rows/rnds = 10 cm
A bust circumference 114 cm
B back width at bust 57 cm
D armhole depth 22 cm
E V-neck depth 18 cm
F Back neck width 22 cm
G upperarm circumference 39 cm
H wrist circumference 22 cm
I sleeve length 50 cm
J underarm to hem front 31 cm
K underarm to hem back 33 cm
L total length 58 cm
Ease at bust: 15 cm
My needles:
4.0 mm for yoke, body and hem.
3.5 mm for sleeve cuffs and neckband.
I got gauge with needle 4.0 mm, but had to block carefully without stretching (see notes above).
I didn’t use a smaller needle for the purl sts as suggested when knitting flat; I have a technique holding my yarn lower on the finger when purling, and higher when knitting. This gives tighter purl sts, and I have used it in several projects. I’m a continental knitter and came up with this technique when experimenting with how to hold the yarn in different ways.
Skeins (swatching not included):

(4) 53 g. 35 g used for 1st sleeve. 18 g left after 1st sleeve (unused). (5) 53 g. 35 g used for 2nd sleeve. 18 g left after 2nd sleeve. 7 g used for neckband, 11 g left at the end.

(4) 25 g. 17 g used for 1st sleeve. 8 g left after 1st sleeve (unused). (5) 24 g. 7 g left after 2nd sleeve. 17 g used for 2nd sleeve. 12 g used for neckband. 5 g left at the end.
- Grey Tynn Silk Mohair: 3 g used total. (1) 26 g. 3 g used. 23 g left at the end.
Other project notes:
- Armhole cast on worked as a purled cable cast on. To close holes in the following rounds, I crocheted one stitch from cast on up to working round and ssk it together with the next stitch (in height of the first cast on sts).
- Body length: 6 cm added before the stripes (= 20 cm from armhole).
- Front hem/ Back hem: one more repeat of row 1-2 added to get 8/ 10 cm.
- Hem Bind-off worked as standard BO in pattern, with needle 4.0 mm (DPN).
- Sleeves: After picking up sleeve sts, I worked in st st for 11 rnds (one less than in pattern), since I already had got 4 cm. Down the sleeve, after the last decrease worked, the suggested length was already obtained, so I didn’t work the following 5 plain rounds, but continued with the stripe and cuff. For the cuff ribbing, I worked one additional round.
- Cuff Bind-off as standard BO in pattern with needle 4.0 mm (DPN).
- Neckband: I worked the neckband using 2 circulars 3.5 mm. One needle from BOR down to the V-neck center stitch, and one up to BOR (most sts on the first needle). Standard BO in pattern with a DPN 4.0 mm.
