Notes

I couldn’t resist this beautiful shawl - so I tested it for Stephanie Lotven.
This beautiful shawl has many color possibilities and is great for using leftovers, as always clearly written and techniques well explained.
It’s not difficult to make, only one need some focus for the dip stitches.
While I often like to start a shawl on the smaller side, I loved to do the opposite for this one; starting with the long side and seeing the rows getting shorter while working on it, and finish quicker than one would believe in the beginning!
Some of my tips can be found on bottom of this page.

For the contrast colors, I used leftovers after my Minimalist Rainbow sweater.

Test thread

Knitting time used:
About 30 hours.

Final measurements and gauge with needle 3.5 mm, washed, blocked and dry: (almost as pattern measurements, only a few cm smaller, so gauge is as in pattern)
Wingspan: 176 cm
Depth: 81 cm

Measurements unwashed were 131 cm wingspan and 64 cm depth.

Swatching, with needle 3.5 mm:
Swatch unblocked:
17.5 cm width and 8.5 cm height = 19 sts and 40 rows per 10 cm/ 4”. Pattern repeat measures unblocked: Stitch gauge 5 cm and row gauge 5 cm.
Swatch was washed and blocked to pattern gauge. Swatch measurements when dry:
20 cm width and 12.5 cm height = 16.5 sts and 27 rows per 10 cm/ 4”. Pattern repeat measurements washed and blocked, dry: Stitch gauge 6 cm and row gauge 7 cm.
Conclusion: I got row gauge as in pattern, while my stitch gauge is a little bit tighter (0.5 cm per 10 cm).

Pattern Gauge:
1 pattern repeat = 2.5 inches/ 6.5 cm x 2.75 inches/ 7 cm worked flat after blocking.

Needles:
3.5 mm (pattern suggests 3.75 mm), KnitPro Mindful Collection interchangeables.

Yarn:
MC: Drops - Fabel
CC: Du Store Alpakka- Tynn Alpakka

Colors and yarn amounts:
NB: My kitchen scale is not perfect, and might have an unaccaracy of +/- 2 grams.

Some tips:

Cast on:
I used the Old Norwegian Cast On/ German Twisted Cast On using two strands of yarn, starting with a slip knot joining both strands together, and then holding one strand around the upper fingers and one around the thumb. This secured that I won’t run out of yarn for this cast on. I undid the starting slip knot later.

Dip stitches:
I tried different alternatives to catch the right dip stitches (especially the first of these). The best way for me was to work all the three right dip stitches with a DPN (Prym ergonomics), and the left dip stitches as described in pattern.

K7tog:
I slipped 6 stitches with yarn in front (yarn is held to WS) and purled the next stitch. Then, I passed the 6 slipped stitches over the one just purled, two by two.
When working the next stitch, I gave it a little tug.

Yarn calculations:
Fabel: 205 m ÷50 g = 4,1 m per 1 g. Multiplicate with x grams to get meters.
Tynn Alpakka: 167 m ÷50 g = 3,34 m per 1 g. Multiplicate with x grams to get meters.
