Test knit for Jennifer Weissman.
A lovely hat with a double brim. Easy to follow instructions.
Cold approved at -16°/ 3.2 °F.
Yarn used:
Gründl Wolle Hot Socks Pearl mit Kaschmir, held double.
Yarn amount used:
328.0 meters (358.7 yards), 82 grams
Measurements washed:
Circumference brim: 47 cm (measured on outside)
Height: 22.5 cm
Needles used:
Since I got gauge with needle 3.75 mm (US 5), I went down two US sizes for the brim, using a 3.25 mm needle (US 3). Lykke interchangeables used, in these sizes:
- Brim lining: 3.25 needle
- Outer brim (though pattern says to continue with smaller needle): 3.5 mm - because I was afraid that the outer brim could get too tight, because of the twisted stitches/ cables. After ten rounds, I see that the row gauge for the outer brim is tighter than the lining, and less elastic. This confirmes my needle choice.
- Body: 3.75 mm, not worked too loose.
- Decreases worked with 3.5 mm needles because I didn’t have an appropriate needle for working small circumferences. Addi Novel Long needles used.
Gauge :
My swatch gauge, with yarn held double, unwashed and swatched flat with needle 3.75 mm: 19 sts = 10 cm in stockinette.
My thoughts where that it would get a bit tighter when knitting in rounds, and block out to gauge after washing. In fact, it got tighter, with 20 sts per 10 cm washed. I could have blocked it more, but since the fit is perfect for my head, I dried it without blocking.
My hat gauge, stockinette, 3.75 mm needles:
Unwashed: 20.5 sts/29 rows. = 10 cm.
Washed: 20 sts/28 rows
Testing, other notes:
-
Unintended modifications: when joining the outer brim with the lining, I got one additional stitch, without noticing. So I worked a K2tog at the old BOR when establishing the crown setup. // When working the crown decreases, I overlooked that only rnd 1-2 should be repeated. So I worked rnd 1-3 once more, and then rnds 1-2 as written.
-
Washing and blocking: I didn’t block it over a balloon, since I have experienced that this could stretch my hats too much. Instead, I laid it flat with a rolled towel between. When the crown and body almost were dry, but the brim a bit wet yet, I did hang it over a lamp to dry the brim hanging. Lamp is 2 cm smaller than my head.
