Another test for Elizabeth Smith! My previous test for her did result in one of my most loved sweaters, and I loved how the pattern is written.
This times, it’s a revamped vest pattern, worked top-down. Again, it’s excellent written. All is well explained, with a lot of tips including pictures and links to video tutorials, found on Elizabeth’s web page.
In the pattern description, it was especially great to follow the front armhole and neck shaping, which often can be complicated, but the different sections made me cruise through it easily, and it was relaxing and enjoyable. The ridges texture to pick up the correct amount of stitches for the frontbands and armhole bands.
I used a standard Bind-off for all edges, with a one size larger needle. Bottom ribbing was worked with main needle and bound off as mentioned above. For the armholes, one should be aware not too bind off too loosely (but not to tight either).
To sew the buttons, I used a fingering yarn (Sandnes Sisu).
Size: 4 (42.5”), straight without waist shaping.
Ease after washing: 5 cm at the bust.
Deadline: December 31st.
Swatch, washed and dry/ gauge:
I got pattern stitch gauge with main needle 4.5 mm. 17 sts and 29 rows. See swatch picture.
My vest gauge with larger needle:
Unwashed: 17 sts and 32 rows.
Washed: 18 sts and 29 rows.
My vest measurements:
Unwashed:
A 105 cm
B 52.5 cm
C same as A
D 4.5 cm
E 25 cm without ribbing
F 3 cm
G 20 cm
H 38 cm
I 30 cm incl ribbing
J 56 cm
Washed:
A 104 cm
B 52 cm
C same as A
D 4 cm
E 26 cm without ribbing
F 3.3 cm cm
G 21.5 cm
H 38 cm
I 31 cm incl ribbing
J 59 cm
My needles:
Main needle: 4.5 mm
Smaller needle: 4.0 mm
Skeins and yarn amount used:
(1) 100 g. 49 g used for upper back, 51 g left. 14 g used for left front, 37 g left. 15 g used for right front, 22 g left. All used up.
(2) 101 g, attached at 4 cm from armhole.
(3) 102 g, attached at 21 cm from armhole. (22 g left after finished front bands, and 11 g left after 1st armhole unused.)
(4) 100 g, attached at 2nd armhole. 10 g used, 90 g left unused.
Used total: 100+101+91+10 = 302 g.
Notes from designer:
My note: pattern states 29 rows!
- At a gauge of 17 sts & 30 rows = 4”/10cm, the pattern works well for worsted or aran-weight yarn.
- Gauge: 17 sts & 30 rows = 4”/10 cm in Garter Ridge st pattern (note: I used a US 9 to get this gauge in my chosen yarn).
- Yardage: Approx 575 (650, 725, 800, 875) (950, 1025, 1125, 1200, 1350) yds.
- Ease: I suggest picking a size whose finished circumference is 1-4” larger than your actual bust circumference, depending on your desired fit.
- Designer wants any inputs on the pattern (readability, grammar, layout, etc) as well as overall thoughts on the fit of the finished garment once complete.
- Sharing finished photos of tester’s garment with the designer and on tester’s Ravelry project page.
