Notes

This pattern is from Butterick’s 1892 book The Art of Knitting (available online here). I’ll add the pattern to the Ravelry database shortly.

There is an error in line 4 that doesn’t account for the cables. The pattern says to knit the row plain, but the four stitches in each cable need to be purled or the cables will be interrupted and look goofy. The line should be Slip 1 Knit 13 Purl 4 Knit 28 Purl 4 Knit 14.

I used 35 repeats of the pattern, which blocked out to panels about 28” by 10”, and made six panels. If I had made it 34 repeats of the pattern, I think I would have been able to finish with 12 skeins of yarn instead of 13. With 33, it definitely would have been done with 12 and would only have been about 1.5” shorter.

The pattern calls for doing up the seams with single crochet, and I did it for the first seam, but I really didn’t like it so I whip-stitched the remaining seams.
