Notes

One ball of yarn left of the wonderful Rowan yarn I got from Ann, “yeayeayeah”. I decided to knit a matching hat to my “Daisy cowl” project.

Description of how I knitted the hat:

Directions

Circular needle 7.0 mm, 31.5in/80cm
This length of the needle if you prefer magic loop knitting, a great advantage when you have few stitches left after several decreases.
Watch video of how to do Magic loop with circular needle:

Abbreviations

co: cast on
k: knit
p: purl
p2tog: purl 2 stitches together
pm: place marker
rnd(s): round(s)
st(s): stitch(es)
ws: wrong side

Measures

Length of daisy report: about 1.18in/3cm
Total length of the hat: 9.1in/23cm
Total number of daisy reports: 7
PS! It’s very stretchy.

Daisy report

rnd 1 and 3: purl
rnd 2:(daisy st, k1) to the end of the rnd
rnd 4: p1, k1 (daisy st, k1) repeat to the last 3 sts, k1, p1, k1

Pattern

Knit with the ws out because that is easiest when knitting daisy stitches in a round

Co 64 sts. Join work.

1 x 1 Ribbing
First rnd: (k1 ,p1)* to end of rnd, pm to denote beginning of rnd.
If you want a brim that is doubled up, work ribbing until piece measures 3.1in/8cm otherwise knit 1.6in/4cm.

Start to knit the daisy reports.

Crown decreases
Start decreases after the second daisy report, when the work measures about 6.3in/16cm from the start of the ribbing

PS! Decrease by 4 x p2tog starting from first st in a daisy st (to remove 1 daisy st). Do the decreases of four and four pairs evenly through a rnd and do not decrease at the same places in different rnds. Before you start to knit a rnd of decreases, it is a great help to place a marker on the stitches where you will start your four pairs of decreases. Photo 4 and 5 from the top shows my hat with it’s ws out as when I knitted it, and the markers are placed on the stitches where I started the decreases.

All decreases are done in the third rnd of a daisy report:

  1. In the third daisy report decrease by 2 x 4 sts, 56 sts left. I did 4 decreases after st 4 and 4 decreases after st 32 in this rnd.

  2. In the fourth daisy report decrease by 2 x 4 sts, 48 sts left. I did 4 decreases after st 16 and 4 decreases after st 40 in this rnd.

  3. In the fifth daisy report decrease by 2 x 4 sts, 40 sts left. I did 4 decreases after st 8 and 4 decreases after st 28 in this rnd.

  4. In the sixth daisy report decrease by 2 x 4 sts, 32 sts left. I did 4 decreases after st 1 and 4 decreases after st 20 in this rnd.

  5. In the seventh daisy report decrease by 4 x 4 sts, 16 sts left (p2tog to the end of the rnd).

Stop knitting after the last rnd of decreases (in the seventh daisy report). Break yarn and pull thread through the 16 remaining sts, pull tight and secure. Weave in ends. Turn inside out.
