I did not get great photos before gifting this last-minute gift idea, but the wedding photographer did.
I decided a week or two before the bridal shower to knit a gift for my sister-in-law. My mother-in-law was a knitter and when she passed away shortly after our wedding I inherited all of her crafting supplies (as the only crafter), including her needles and a stitch book. I used to dislike knitting until I discovered the variety of stitch patterns I could try. Now I’m an avid knitter and I owe much of that to the stitch book I inherited and a sense that picking up needles would honour my MIL.
Thus it seemed appropriate that I should knit my SIL a gift for her wedding as I imagined her mother would have. (Although her mom didn’t knit lace that I have ever seen.)
With newborn twins at home I knew it would have to be a “quick” knit… what better way to be quick than to design something from scratch… haha. But once I had the idea in my head I had to follow through.
I knew I wanted a stole because I knew my SIL would likely wear it most often as a scarf.
I knew I wanted lace. And white-ish beads. (These are egg-shell in colour.)
I knew I wanted it to be fully reversible so the wearer didn’t have to worry which side is showing (not that she would worry).
I knew I wanted to knit it length-wise because for me that is faster - fewer turns. (Yes, the short-width knit edging does negate that, but it’s a relatively short length.)
I had hoped to find a dark orange or red lace yarn. Alas, my choices were limited as I had no time to order yarn, my lace stash was in storage (this would have been great in my Montague Spice Trail), and at the time my LYSes had little by way of lace. This lovely garnet was the closest I could get. It’s a little more pink than I was aiming for, but gorgeous none the less.
I knew I wanted it to be feminine, but not too lacey - hence the garter diamonds as the center body.
All in all, I think I succeeded.
I want one for myself now that I’ve seen it test knit in different yarns too. It even held up to a variegated yarn.
