Here he is, completed at last! I looked at various versions of the caterpillar on Pinterest but couldn’t find a pattern so this is just made up. It is made in cottons, as are the various food bits, because it is so simple to pop in the washing machine and will last longer than wool.
I could not find any mdf or pressed cardboard rings - having spent endless hours looking for these to make wreaths previously. I opted for combination of things. The first ring is a rubber quoit but I did not use any more of these because they are so heavy. The rest of the rings are made from graduated plastic embroidery hoops, covered in wadding. I designed a tail piece separately to finish him off. This was made with a lining so it is double.
The head and mouth were made as an extension of the individual pieces which cover the rings and I then made the eyes and antennae to match the detail in the book and in the cardigan patterns which I made previously. I added 6 little round feet to keep him steady.
The result is perfect for little hands and arms to get right in to the caterpillar and he can be carted about quite easily. Just having to keep track on all of the food bits now!
