Improvised bonnet. The size turned out funny - it’s too small and long I think, but it might fit a preemie.
What I did:
- Cast on 56 sts
- Knit 3 garters (6 rows in garter stitch)
- Keep knitting the first 4 and last 4 sts in garter, knit the lace pattern over remaining 48 sts
- Repeat lace pattern 2,5 times (approx 10 cm)
- Purl 1 row
- Divide sts as follows: 17 sts - PM - 22 sts - PM - 17 sts
- Cut the yarn and move it to the start of the 22 sts
- Knit stockinette across the central sts, k2tog at the end of each row.
- When 5 sts remain at each edge, decrease 4 sts evenly across the centre sts
- Knit garter across the central sts, k2tog at the end of each row until no sts remain
- Bind off.
- Pick up 4 sts from left front. Knit strap in garter stitch.
- Sew on snap fastener on end of strap and on right side of bonnet
PM=place marker
Changes if I knit this again:
- Have considerably more stitches in the width of the bonnet (around 96 (needs to be divisible by 6)) for a normal newborn size.
- For a snugger fit around the face, CO 10 sts less than intended width of bonnet, knit garter sts, then inc 10 sts
- Length before decreases: around 12 cm(?)
- I will also consider knitting the strap(s) at the same time by casting on the length of 1 strap+the length of the bonnet, knitting across all of them in garter stitch and then binding off the strap sts before continuing with the actual bonnet.
