My husband needed an iPad cover, so I improvised one. If you want to make one like it, here’s the pattern! Since this isn’t a “formal” pattern, feel free to use it or modify it in anyway you like, but if you do use it, I’d appreciate a PM so I can look at your project.
Skills needed:
Basic knit stitches,
Basic decreases (Slip-slip-knit (SSK) and Knit 2 together (K2tog))
Basic crochet stitches: chaining, single crochet and half-double crochet.
Materials
Approximately 200 yards of worsted weight yarn (I used 2 100 yard skeins and had about 1/5 of a skein left over. Your mileage may vary.)
1 pair size 8 knitting needles
1 crochet hook size I-9
1 button any size (I recommend at least 1/2” in diameter.) My button is 3/4” in diameter
Pattern
Cast on 53 stitches.
Work in stockinette for 46 rows or until piece is 7” long; end on a WS row.
Purl 1 row (turning row for “seam”).
Work in stockinette for another 46 rows (or same number of rows you worked for ‘first section’).
Purl 1 row (turning row for other “seam”).
Work 14 rows (about 3”) in stockinette, ending with WS row.
Begin decreases rows:
Row 1: K2, SSK, knit across to last 4 stitches, K2tog, K2.
Row 2: Purl.
Repeat these 2 rows until 25 stitches remain.
Bind off all stitches.
If desired or necessary, block to measurements. (I didn’t block mine.)
Fold piece into an envelope shape along the purled seam lines. Using mattress stitch, sew up sides, so you have what looks basically like an envelope.
Using size I crochet hook, rejoin yarn and work 2 rows of SC along inside edge of opening. Fasten off.
Rejoin yarn to edge of outside flap. Work 1 row of half-double crochet.
Next row: SC in first 12 stitches. Chain 7 for button loop. (Depending on the size of your button, you may need more or less chains.)
Skip 1 stitch, SC in last 12 stitches, FO
Weave in all ends.
Attach button to front of cover to correspond to button loop location.
