I used to make this little cardigan for my own girls and my nieces when they were young. All colours, especially red for their school uniform. It brought back happy memories.
I made this little cardigan as follows:
Back:
With smaller needles cast on 48 sts, work 7 rows of rib.
Change to larger needles
Row 1: Sl1, yfwd, yrn, p1, yrn (p2tog) 4 times, (p1, yrn) 4 times, repeat 3 times, (p2tog) 4 times, yrn, p1, yon, k1.
Row: 2: P
Row 3: K
Row 4: P
These 4 rows form pattern.
Work until 13 patterns have been completed.
Right Front:
Cast on 30 sts, work rib, working buttonhole at the beginning of the 3rd row. Finish rib rows and place button-hole band stitches (6) on a safety pin.
Work on remaining 24 sts as follows:)
Row 1: s1, yfwd, yrn, p1, yrn (p2tog) 4 times, (p1, yrn) 4 times, (p2tog) 4 times, yrn, p1, yon, k1.
Row: 2: P, Row 3: K, Row 4: P
Work until 9 patterns have been worked finishing on Row 4. cast off 3 sts at neck edge on next row, decrease 1 st and neck edge on every row until 19sts.
Work straight until front measures same as back.
Left Front:
Work same as Right Front, working button border.
Row 1: s1, p2tog, yrn, (p1, yrn) 2 times, (p2tog) 4 times, (p1, yrn) 4 times), (p2tog) 4 times, yrn, p1, yon, K1
work as for right front, reversing shapings.
Sleeves:
With smaller needles, cast on: 29 sts work rib, increase to 30sts
Row 1 p1, yrn (p2tog) 3 times, (p1, yrn) 4 times, (p2tog) 4 times, (p1, yrn) 4 times, (p2tog) 3 times, yfwd, p1.
Change to larger needles.
Work as for pattern until desired length. I worked until 7 full pattern sequences plus row 1 and 2 on next sequence.
To finish, with smaller needles, pick up button/button-hole bands and continue the rib until they fit, when slightly stretched to the neck. Leave button border sts on safety pin. Rib 6 sts of button-hole border and then
pick up stitches for the neckband evenly around until you get to the button band and rib them.
Next row, rib all around, not forgetting to place the button-hole at the end of the row, or beginning of next row, whichever preferred.
Work a couple more rows of rib and cast off.
These are only basic directions. I’m not a pattern writer, but I hope you get the gist and can complete your cardigan without too much trouble. Enjoy
