Making i-cord with the lighter pink, and knitting the hat base with the darker pink.
Day 1: Starting with ~sigh~ tediously hand-knitted 4-stitch i-cord.
Day 2: Yes, still working on this.
Day 3: Third day of i-cord knitting. Next time, I’ll have to get this super-thick yarn and use that instead of i-cord. Later… I-cord done. At least, the yarn is all gone. Hope it’s enough to cover the hat. Tomorrow, hat knitting starts.
Day 4: I think I need more i-cord. Project on hold until I get some more light pink yarn.
February 15, 2017: Got more yarn, so starting up again. Hat base done.
Knit the hat base:
- with darker yarn, CO 44
- make 10 rounds of k2-p2 ribbing
- increase 8 sts to 52 sts (k4-kfb-k5-kfb around until there are 52 sts)
- p2-k24 around - this will create a purl “trench” between the two brain halves
- drecrease for the top in 13 sections, i.e. k4-k2tog-k5-k2tog around, knit plain round, k3-k2tog-k4-k2tog around, knit plain round, etc.
- bind and tie at 13 sts
February 16, 2017: Placed the i-cord next to the hat, but not loving the contrast. May knit a new hat base with the lighter pink and try again. Only change will be using one purl stitch instead of two to demarcate the brain halves.
Well, sewed half the i-cord on to the darker pink base hat. Not sold on it, but will sew on the other half and see if I have a change of heart.
The sewing of the i-cord is turning out to be more tedious than actually knitting the i-cord.
February 17, 2017: Not that happy about the results, but it’s finished. Looks better with the ribbing turned to the inside, but that leaves one’s ears uncovered. Will be good enough for the Science March though, since that takes place in late April when it’s warm.
