Notes

Making a Moss hat with chunky yarn and 6.0 mm needles. Using only a section of the chart (18 sts wide x 21 sts tall) and adding a smile. The motif will be on two sides of the hat.

  • prepare balls of yarn: 3 white balls for the background plus 2 very small balls for the teeth and glasses, and 4 black balls for the hair (noting that one section of the black in each motif is only 3 rows), 2 brown balls for the face
  • CO 68 sts + 1 extra for seaming up
  • knitting flat (i.e. not in the round), knit 2 plain rounds and start intarsia chart - the chart numbers are 8-18-16-18-8 (8 background sts, 18 for first motif, 16 background sts, 18 for the the second motif, 8 background sts
  • decrease at top, alternating with plain rounds, as follows: k15-k2tog 4 times (64 sts), then decrease in 8 sections (i.e. k6-k2tog around, k5-k2tog around, k4-k2tog around, etc.)
  • bind and tie at 16 sts, leaving a long tail for seaming
  • seam hat together
  • pick up 68 sts the bottom and knit one plain round, reducing by 8 sts evenly (e.g. k6-k2tog-k5-k2tog-k2tog around) to get 60 sts
  • make k2-p2 ribbing and BO when you like the length

A few hours later…
Blocking now. Photos on the weekend when there’s enough light (it gets dark at around 4:30 pm, so can’t take photos on weekdays after work).

The first photo, taken under fluorescent lighting, is more true-to-colour. The others were taken under daylight, but the cold, grey light of winter.

Idea for another hat:
A stranded hat with repeats of this pixelated Moss face, plus “TNETTENBA” and the alternate emergency number, “0118 999 881 999 119 725 3”.
