Notes

My sister requested this sweater, which is a seamless raglan (i.e. easy!), probably suitable for Cascade Ecological Wool and 6.0 mm needles, although if I were using Lopi, I’d use at least 7.0 mm needles.

It’s apparently from a British television series called, “The Killing”, and the main character named Sarah Lund wears this sweater.

There’s a whole thread about this famous sweater in the British Knitters group, including links to the charted motif which I’ve redrawn here because my printer wasn’t connected at the time. I guess it’s the UK version of the Lebowski “Dude” sweater. There are many versions in the Projects area.

It seems that this Sarah Lund character also wears a dark sweater with this motif, but my sister wants the light coloured jumper.

The motif is 15 sts by 12 rows/rounds. I’m knitting 15 rounds between each repeat.

As usual, living dangerously and not making a gauge swatch. I note that most of the Ravelry projects use bulky yarn with an 8.0 mm needle. I downsized to a 6.0 mm needle so that my sister can wear this jumper without a shirt underneath. It’s 100% wool, so it’s going to be pretty warm already, and my sister, I suspect, is like me in that she tends to be too hot most of the time, rather than too cold.

Notes to self:
CO 64 sts (20 for each of the front and back, 10 for each sleeve, plus 4 sts for the raglan lines). Make ribbing. Increase at raglan lines and start motif pattern, taking care to center the motif. Sweater has 3 repeats on the body and 4 repeats on the sleeves.

My gauge is 3 sts/inch. I’m a size US 18 in tops, but my sister is a size 12-14, so if I can squeeze into it, hopefully it will stick to my round body like paint (“smeared on”, as they say) and it should be the perfect size for her.

My LYS is the best! I PM’d them and asked for 2 more skeins of the natural in the same dye lot, and they had the yarn wound and ready for me the next day - this, in spite of a damaging flood in their store over the weekend.

104 sts for the body, 40 sts for each sleeve on holders. CO 8 sts at the underarm, resulting in 120 sts / 8 repeats / 40 inches for the body, and 48 sts / 16 inches for each sleeve (3 repeats plus 3 extra sts).

The body is complete and I’ve not used even one whole skein of yarn. The MC uses 2 skeins, and I estimated 2 and a bit, so I’ll have an extra ball of the natural left.

Tried on the body. It’s too tight for me, but I can get into it, so it should be the perfect close fit for my sister. LOL, I think the photos should be captioned, “Sarah Lund gains weight - and inexplicably becomes Chinese”!

When I knit the sleeves, I’ll separate the motif strips with 12 plain rounds instead of 15 because my sister and I have short arms, but for the jumper to look like the original, it’ll need 4 strips on the sleeves.

48 sts on each sleeve, reduced to 45 (3 pattern repeats) after first pattern strip. Switch from 6.0 mm to 5.0 mm needles for the sleeve ribbing.

May 30, 2011: Finished. Photos after blocking. In the first photo, I’m trying to pose as Sarah Lund, LOL!
