The Daruma doll is a traditional Japanese toy and talisman symbolizing perseverance, endurance and good luck. Daruma dolls are often given as gifts before such events as examinations, operations or giving birth, etc.

Traditionally, the Daruma dolls sold are customarily without eyes. When the owner sets a goal, he or she paints one eye. When the goal is achieved, the other eye is painted.
