7.15.12 - Just finished installing this one a few hours ago. This little elephant statue is named Miss Fancy, named after an actual elephant that was kept there at the park when it was the original location of the Birmingham Zoo…many years ago, way before my time. The elephant was known also for having a love of bootleg whiskey during Prohibition.
I worked the legwarmers first over a couple of evengings. The tu tu took a couple of evenings after work also. Finished the trunk embellishment Sunday morning before heading out early. Lisa met me at the park so she could help me assembling the piece, I was so glad she came because I would have needed someone to help me reach around Miss Fancy. It was so funny that I thought that chosing the early morning would avoid the crowd and police…I pulled up to a police patrol car only a few yards away (you can see him in some of the photos). He was very cool about us putting this up. It did get a little attention also. A man who was fishing came over asking what we were doing, so I handed him the book that I brought along (in case we ran into the authorities…had my “story” together too). Our conversation led to his creative side, from sketching to macrame. A walker gave us enthusiastic thumbs up and told us how nice it looked and great job! Others just looked at it.
Then there was pancakes with Lisa to celebrate!
Great day!
