Notes

This is one of those siren projects that has been calling to me for some time. In case you are wondering about what “Sanquhar” is or means, my friend, Jill, AKA musictomyears sent me this link: Sanquhar. Check it out!

At least two appealing patterns for these traditional Scottish gloves can be found on line and I’ve made these using a combination of both directions plus a bit of re-interpretation to suit my needs. I would have further altered the pattern according to my ‘glove knitting’ sense, but felt the tug of authenticity keeping me true to the original Sanqhuhar-style gloves. I did lengthen the corrugated ribbed cuff by an extra inch which I felt was warmer and in better proportion to the rest of the glove.

I had never done finger gussets before and liked how that worked with transitioning between the front and back finger stitches.

I do love the yarn and swatched Mini-Me from Laris Designs to see how tightly I could knit it given that one pattern called for 11 sts per inch and the other for 14! The closest I could get was 11 per inch using two color stranding.

After starting these gloves while traveling to Maine this summer, I stumbled at the fingers so they sat, unattended for about 2 months while I thought about what to do with the finger patterning and was otherwise distracted by a house move. (That is a whole other story!!!) Due to XMAS gift pressures and a bit more sanity, I went back to figure out how to deal with the fingers and settled on the salt and pepper that you see here rather than the pinwheel pattern that was called for so as to get a better sized finger width.

I boldly knitted the year into the cuff, so I suppose that will be part of my deadline to finish up. The other part of the story of the move is that I also knitted the name of our new property, Seven Oaks, into the other cuff. I used the numeral 7 to keep the cuff writing similar sized but it also represents the house number which is also number 7!!!

I’m very pleased that these are finished and although my husband is aware that I have been working on a blue and white project, I think he is blissfully unaware that these are intended as a Christmas gift for him!

Cast on with 2.25mm dp needles and changed to 2.00mm circulars after working the first row.
Gauge 11 stitches per inch
Used just a few yards of a second skein of M/C, blue
