Notes

This is a semi-circular lace shawl with a wedge construction which allows you to add extra wedges or a fuller shape, and likewise the edging lace can be extended.

I’ve decided on Conservation Volunteers because to my mind it has a threefold benefit - volunteering helps individuals, strengthens communities, and also gets good work done. This one is well established and does broader work, but also has a specific bushfire regeneration branch.

The pattern photos were taken in nearby Belair National Park, on a 2017 burn off site. It was wonderful and very heartening to see how much has grown back in 3 years. Recovery from more signifigant fires, and fires in more fragile/critical environments is a different issue however, and human effort makes a difference.

So very tempted to rename this Tree Hugger.. :)

5th Jan, 2020. This is a design-in-progress, based on gannet’s Wildfire lace, to raise funds to support those affected by or fighting the Australian fires, because it’s something that I can do..

The turnaround time involved in designing/knitting/releasing a design means this particular fundraiser will focus more on post-fire regeneration than emergency relief.

If you’re looking for ways to support this yourself now, this article has a number of suggestions. Or this one - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-01-01/bushfire-relief:-h...

To support the injured animals: (It’s estimated something in the ballpark of half a billion animals have been killed.)
RSPCA - https://www.rspcansw.org.au/bushfire-appeal/
WIRES - https://www.wires.org.au/donate/emergency-fund
Animal Rescue Craft Guild - https://www.facebook.com/groups/arfsncrafts/, who urgently need volunteers to make pouches, mittens, and other supplies for the care of the injured.

For the Kangaroo Island fires:

A wonderful group of Indie dyers are workng together to raise support funds, so if you want to buy yarn for a cause, visit the Bushfire Support 2020 (Australia) group.
