Found a youtube video that helped explain the confusing first step. (YouTube “How to knit a kerchief/shawl). As the video continues, the demo differs from the written pattern in step 2. I followed the demo instructions.

Since this was my first knit triangle shape, it was slow going. I was able to learn and practice 3 kinds of increases (yo, m1r, m1L). And even KFB (when i was short a stitch on one side) and tried purl increases and decreases when i ran into other mistakes (mine, not the pattern’s). Also got to try color changes and learned overall construction of a top down triangle.
