I started out using I hook for the brim, then switched to J for the top and going just as pattern reads. I decided it was too loose in general, and especially the big holes under the crossovers. Restarted the top still using the I hook, and adding a single DC in between the two sets of fdptr going between the center two DC in the row before to close the hole, ignoring the extra stitch in the next row.
