I did 16 rows of shells before the thumb-opening, because I am using fingering weight yarn and would like them slightly longer than the original pattern. After the two special thumb rows, I only did 3 regular shell rows.
To join the shells, I slipped into the 3rd beginning shell, slipped into the dc and finally slipped into the chain before beginning a new shell.
Quick and gratifying project. It fits well too ^^
