Making a ‘red-white-blue’ piece for my mom to take with her to the July 4th family reunion. Want a light gauzy piece she can use in the South Dakota summer scorch.
. Coast used single (not held double)
. Needles: US 3
… started with metal ChiaoGoo’s but found myself slowing because the yarn responds slippery
… switched to bamboo tips on C2 (Candy)
Long-tail CO
. Used my little remaining Crimson blob to do a two-strand long-tail. The trick is remember to make the full cake the active strand. Means I have two extra tails to weave in, but it was worth not having the hassle of estimating the length correctly.
. Using this method for the other COs
Weaving Ends
. After working about 20 rows of a new color, going back and weaving ends
. The Coast ends like to creep up. It’s sticky enough that as I move around, the ends will appear up by the needle.
. Using ends to smooth transitions along the edge
Bind-Offs
. Simple bind-off to match long-tail CO
. But using US 8, because Coast does not have stretch
. However … with blocking, some of this loose method looks wonky. If I did this again, I’d like to find a different bind-off that looks cleaner yet has stretch.
The first three sections felt like forever. They use just under half a cake of the Coast. The second three sections could be done with Holst shade bags, but you may be playing yarn chicken with C4. Could definitely get either two identical pieces or do a reverse order second piece with 6 full color cakes.

BLOCKING
. Gently agitated in lukewarm water with shampoo
. Rinse repeatedly in cool water
… very little staining or grey oil water - the ecru remains clean!
. Use Knitblocker pin-combs to straighten top edge
… pin out points if needed or to straighten BO edges
… as piece is drying, it shrinks.
… … took combs out and straightened arcs or blips
… … did not re-pin and let finish drying
DIMENSIONS - Unblocked:
. Length: 65”
. Height (at center): 18.5”
DIMENSIONS - Blocked:
. Length: 78”
. Height (at center): 17”
MODS?
. Heidi’s Elbow River is almost the same method, just a deeper triangle and using an I-cord edging (which I think I like better)
YARN IDEAS
. Really beautiful projects in Coast.
. See Trin-Annelie and Satokichi.
. RiotousAssembly mentions using shade bags and a Fibonacci sequence.
. I like the modified version with a mix of st st and garter vs all garter
. Possible use with the Crimson cake and the red/pink grab bag?
… But looks to need two half skeins for the first two colors.
… Purchased more red cakes in a Holst sale. Will measure grams.
. Grey idea: Putty, Silver Grey, Charcoal, Lead, Black
