See my first 3-color Musselburgh
. Crowns: 46g each
. Middle helical: 31g
. Crowns: Victorian Gothic
. Helical stripe in the center: Conrad’s Heart
. Crowns+40 rounds
. Striping 60 each crown color
CAST-ON
. KnitPink’s slow-mo Pinhole cast-on
… Quite fiddly on the dpn’s
… I have a hard time with using two fingers the way Staci does, so I just use my pointer finger
… Knit a round/row after. I tighten with the tail, then slide the stitches to the right and knit straight across before moving them to the other dpn’s.
… … Doing the kfb’s right away - harder to get that b stitch.
CROWNS
. increase up to 144 sts (36 per dpn)
. in addition to the increases/decreases: 40 rounds
Increases
. On my second one, I am getting a bit of a ‘pull’ with the M1’s. The leftmost leg of the regular stitch to the right of the M1L looks big, same with the rightmost leg of the stitch to the left of the M1R.
. Cracked open my Patty Lyons’ book, because the following SSK trick works so well. For these M1’s, she mentions how lifting the bar can get a little bit tight. Also can create little holes.
… So now I’m trying her recommendation of creating a YO on the row previous to the pattern increase, then knitting it twist-wise on the next row. Basically you are wrapping the YO to set it up for the direction of the typical M1L or R increase.
… pp 118-120 for explanation and images.
… And it’s still wonky. What the heck? Why is this one different. IS this one different?
Decreases
! Remember - the decrease crown is SSK-knit-K2tog for nicer looking lines. I got it wrong on my Tarte Mbgh and it isn’t as cool.
. Use Patty Lyons’ SSK trick from her Knitting Bag of Tricks book, pp. 100-1
… not convinced on this - is it the yarn?
… still zigzaggy and I think too much twist?
BRIM
. Midsection - folded
… 120 rounds
… The hat is folded in half, so 12” = 6” which is folded again for the brim, so 3” brim which is a little more than the height of my ear.
. Helical
… stop 3 sts before next color
… a little looseness is fine with transition
Weaving in ends
. I get a pinched look from weaving my ends
. Trying the over/under with starting the new color and weaving the ends in. Still a little pinchy, but not as bad.
Question?
. Decreases are SSK to K2tog
. But the very last set is K2tog, SSK. I’m not sure how/why this might matter? This time, I made them SSK, k2tog to match.
Wet-block on head form.
