Done! Took my a couple months to return to it. Nice piece. I can see making another!
Currently finished up to weaving in ends. No space to block so will be a little too easy to let languish.
Doing a similar greyscale set as the Pattern sample
YOs
. Pattern advises to use a YO to help give ease along the top edge. You put it in after the first stitch on the WS, then drop when you return to it on the RS
… There is a KFBF before the last stitch on the RS edge
… I tried doing a KFB, then knitting into the YO, but it just makes the inherent YO area larger.
… Now I insert the right needle tip into the KFBF stitch and lift it and the YO off the left needle. Then I do the increase into the expanded stitch. Seems to make the increase stitches and edge stitch more regular.
… And since I’m a thrower, I pinch at the base of that first WS stitch before I do the YO, otherwise the needle flies out. Argh!!!
SHORT ROWS
. Doing as Pattern recommends - going tight on the double-stitches - AND on transition from the short row blob to the regular stitches (so there isn’t a gap at the end of the blob)
. Started out switching back and forth for the short rows while the piece was still small.
. Once I got comfortable with the pattern, I started knitting backwards for the short row chunks. Yay, I remember! Works slick - totally worth learning.
Finally returned to this WIP to weave in the ends on 01/19/25. Wet blocking next.

YARN
Since I am likely going to make more than one of these, I’m weighing after each section and each rope. I’d like to try a gradient with Holst Coast cakes and that’ll give me a starting estimate.

QUEUE NOTES
Fingering in 3-4 colors. US 5.
With three colors (55g, 80g, 95g) you alternate the ropes
. Or pick a gradient of three colors with a 4th for ropes.
. Or a person could use an even longer gradient of say, Holst Coast, with a single lightest/darkest color for the ropes - or contrast gradient with scraps?!
… There are 13 garter sections : 12 ropes
Looks like people are running out of color A, so either find a 1+ in stash or get creative
. Can do 7 sections (-1) but the shawl length is 86.5” so watch how wide those are, maybe it won’t subtract too much.
The original black, charcoal, silver one is very striking.
