SECTION 1
. C1: Cast Iron (black)
. C2: Sweatshirt (medium grey)
. I had to chart this to really settle the pattern into my head.
… It is indeed a long portion - uses at least two skeins of Loft, which would be about 550y total
. Was having a hard time tensioning the C2 span between C2 rows. Knit the first C2 stitch on the RS; look to the back and pull up both the C2 and C1 strands, while gently pulling down on the fabric.
… The Loft is sticky, so it can get stuck too tight or too loose.
. Also uncertain of whether I should catch the C2 behind the C1 again, but left it a long span - looks like a running stitch along the edge of the i-cord edge.
SECTION 2:
. C3: Snowbound (white)
. C4: Soot (dark grey)
… Considering reversing the color order on these because I’m using Snowbound again in the next section.
… But I think I’ll continue emulating DGL’s Project
SECTION 3:
. (C5): Snowbound (white)
. C6: Flannel (blue)
SECTION 4:
. Not enough Sweatshirt, so using Cast Iron for a black divider garter ridge at the beginning and end of this section
. C3: Snowbound (white)
. C4: Soot (dark grey)
SECTION 5:
. (C5): Snowbound (white)
. C6: Flannel (blue)
. Continuing to follow DGL’s project, and the pattern’s advice, of going up a needle size for this linen stitch section. The fabric has gotten quite wide and there is a lot more bunching and skooching along the circ. Plus, I’m kinda tired and I don’t want to have to focus as much on maintaining a looser tension.
. I think if I were to make this pattern again, I would try dona_knits approach to create a birds-eye look
SECTION 6:
. White divider garter ridge
. Soot (dark grey) ribbed edge
BIND-OFF
. Not certain how I will bind-off with this sticky yarn.
. Did Lori’s Twisty
. from Patty Lyons’ Knitting Bag of Tricks book, also did:
… Sharp Corner trick, p. 172
… End Fix, p. 175
BLOCKING
. Soak in cold water with hair conditioner
. Will pin out on boards, especially the ribbing
DIMENSIONS - Unblocked
. Long edge: 67”
. I-cord edge: 49”
. BO (ribbing) edge: 39”
. straight from top to corner: 29”
DIMENSIONS - Blocked
. Long edge: 79”
. I-cord edge: 52”
. BO (ribbing) edge: 48”
. straight from top to corner: 30”
I can see having the ribbing contract if using a smoother yarn. But the Loft sticks to itself and relaxes after blocking, seems pliable enough and then holds?
Also shown with my Bousta Beanie made with leftovers
NEEDLES
. Some projects use US 4 (or other size) throughout
. Some go up on Section 3
. Some also go up on Section 5 or go looser
YARN SELECTION
. Inspired by DGL’s project
. Pattern calls for 6 colors, but I’ve got only 5.
. Using same color for C3+C5.
. Only Cast Iron has 2 skeins, so have to use it for C1.
… Colorwise this is the reverse of the Pattern and what most Projects are doing. They have the lighter color as the C1, darker as C2. Still looks good to me on Section 1.
C1: Cast Iron (black) - about 55g each
C2: Sweatshirt (mid-grey)
C3: Snowbound (white/lt gray)
C4: Soot (dark-grey)
(C5): Snowbound
C6: Flannel (blue)
YARN WEIGHTS (in grams : total - remaining = used)
Section 1
. C1: Cast Iron #1: 54.6t (used all)
. C1: Cast Iron #2: 54.5t - 45.6r = 8.9u
. C1: Cast Iron total used: 54.6+8.9 = 63.5g
. C2: Sweatshirt: 48.5t - 1.6r = 46.9g
Section 2
. C3: Snowbound: 53.9t - 51.4r = 2.5u
. C4: Soot: 54.3t - 52.9 = 1.4u
Section 3
. C5: Snowbound: 51.4 - 37.1r = 14.3u
. C6: Flannel: 54.4t - 45.2r = 9.2u
Section 4
. C1: Cast Iron: 45.6 - 42.6r = 3.0u
. C3: Snowbound: 37.1 - 30.5r = 6.6u
. C4: Soot: 52.9 - 43.7r = 9.2u
Section 5
. C5: Snowbound: 30.5 - 17.8r = 12.7u
. C6: Flannel: 45.2 - 33.7r = 11.5
Section 6
. C3: Snowbound: 17.8 - 16.1r = 1.7u
. C4: Soot: 43.7 - 22.2r = 21.5u
Bind-off
. C4: Soot: 22.2 - 20.6r = 1.6u
TOTALS
. C1: Cast Iron: 54.6+8.9+3.0 = 66.5g
. C2: Sweatshirt: 48.5t - 1.6r = 46.9g
. C3+5: Snowbound: 53.9t - 16.1r = 37.8u
. C4: Soot: 54.3t - 20.6r = 33.7u
. C6: Flannel: 54.4t - 33.7r = 20.7u
… I’m a little concerned I may run out of Sweatshirt but I won’t know until I get there. Really love the squishy/spongey feel of Loft, so I won’t cry too hard if I have to buy another one. Just a little if I can’t find it on sale.
… … whew! Played some yarn chicken there!
… Have found 2 knots in the Cast Iron. They are small and very weak. Now I’m wondering if I missed others in all the thick and thin chunkiness of the yarn texture.
… Now that I’m in the higher numbers towards the end of the section, I’ve started to weigh after each rep. Pretty certain I will run out of the Sweatshirt (C2) or it will be very close.
… … I’ve looked again at the pattern and decided that perhaps it doesn’t really matter if I cannot do all the repeats. The different mosaics do not flow from one to another - they are more just blocks with stripe separators.
