I think this is the one! Been dithering over how to use my precious Shaken not Stirred skein.
COLOR SELECTION
Now to choose which five?
. hmm… the lightest gray is the new Caroline which is a 3 ply and feels thinner - seems best candidate for MC
. the one medium grey leans red, so that’s out.
. I think my color choices are not optimal. The two dark are very close in shade. So I’m thinking about using them as a visual ‘arrow’ and having them only touch on the ends.
… see Fiona64’s project - she does this with her two dark ones, and places them next to the lightest triangles on the ends and the middle. Perhaps X marks the spot?
. I am also reversing the C1 and 3 along the center triangles to continue the every other rhythm.
Project Notes Errata and Mods:
. “See Mawie’s project notes
… Section 7 and 9, set up: if you want to avoid a slipped stitch over two rows knit the first stitch on Set-up WS row
… Section 17: last bracket-pick up the last stitch from section 16 not 14
… Section 19: break the CC and slip the stitches to the point where you attache the yarn anew. “
. Sigiwu’s Project Notes
… “for the sake of symmetry, worked in section 1 the first two kfb as kfb (the needle coming in from behind for the b), and the second kfb as kbf (working first through the back loop, then inserting my left needle once more into the same stitch in such a way that the twisted bit comes first, then work the stitch once more normally), on the second stitch after the marker and with only 2 stitches left until the end of row”
… I couldn’t get the kbf to come out differently.
… Tried M1L, center stitch, M1R - but am not convinced on that either.
… What I’m stuck on is that the four triangles are not the same. Damned OCD! So I’m going to contemplate how to make them similar.
MOD 1
. Why not do Sections 1-11 twice?
… Put the first on hold
… Do it a second time
… then join with the side triangles?
MOD 2
… Because I am uncertain about the transition to garter, I could also leave an extra long tail when putting Section 11 on hold, in case I need to tink that last row and Kitchener?
… If I did it this way, then I could do the side triangles the same as Sections 1-3. And then all the triangles would be the same - satisfying my OCD!
… but Kitchener … (grumble and groan)
KITCHENER
. Yes, I did it!
. I did the side triangles the same way as Sections 1-3.
. Then I tinked back the 10th purl row of the MC Sections 11 on the two ends and used those for the Kitchener
. Took some jiggling the stitches with my darning needle tip to get the tension right, but it totally worked out. While it is extra ‘work’ to purl that row and then tink it back, it is exactly the amount of yarn needed for the Kitchener.
SIDE TRIANGLES side note
. I think some people may have done their PSSO (aka CDD) as a knit column spine? Because so much of this piece is garter, I’m not going to do that and will follow the instructions to garter over it.
BORDER
. I blocked before knitting the border. I wanted to even out the edges, especially at the knit Section 11 which wants to pull in. Which I didn’t quite succeed (see below)
. Picked up 629 sts (instead of 620 in pattern)
. Changed my increase rate to a flat K3, m1 repeat, pausing only to do the m1, k1, m1 increases right at the corners.
. Well over 800 sts.
. Uncertain about the loosey-goosey pickup, but it’s new to me so I’m giving it a try.
. VinGirl recommended doing the I-cord on the WS so the contrast color doesn’t show through. I didn’t do this, so I’ll try to take a detail photo so you can see the vertical CC blips
BORDER BREAKDOWN
. MC white (lt grey) for pickup and stockinette: 10.0g
. Blue for first set of garter: 20.7g
. Grey for second stockinette: 7.0g
. SnS multi for second set of garter: 11.5g
. Black for I-cord BO: 14.9g
. Total border g: 64.1
note: another person said they used 44g total for their border.
I am hoping I have enough black for the bind off. If not, I have plenty of the SnS multi, so I’ll leave it attached. My plan is to do one long edge and weigh to check my usage rate.
. I had 1 gram of black remaining.
. Really uncertain about the tension for the border. I think if I had more remaining, that would have made me more relaxed. Yeah, I think that since the center is so much stretchy garter, one should have a stretchy border. Oh well. We’ll see what happens after blocking and wearing.
DIMENSIONS - Unblocked, Pre-border
. 19.5-20.5” wide by 54.5” long
DIMENSIONS - Blocked, Pre-border
. 20” wide by 65.5” long
DIMENSIONS - with Border before second blocking
. 22-ish“ wide by 64.5” long
DIMENSION - with Border after second blocking
. 20.5-21” wide center
. 23.5-25” wide ends
. 70-71” length
BLOCKING
. First blocking resulted in some scalloping. This base opens and relaxes after a soak. I used KnitBlocker pin combs and as the piece shrank with drying, there was scalloping between the combs.
. Second blocking, I am going to just lay it out and gently press it into shape. Then we’ll see how it shrinks when drying.
… compare the two photos to see shrinkage
. You can also see the ‘fishtail’ which I attribute mostly to shifts in my gauge. I often wind up with either tighter or looser at the beginning, depending on the pattern. I think in this instance, perhaps looser in the beginning because of the easy-going garter.
YARN WEIGHTS
. Will be weighing my yarn per section (grams)
… plan is to use leftovers gradient style for a second one
