Final Verdict: Feeling the need to immediately cast on another pair.
As soon as I saw this percolating on Instagram, I knew I would finally use my treasured 80/10/10 MCN.
Hoping to get two pairs out of my skeins so I can make them for an aunt.
MY SIZE
. Wrist: 6.25”
. Hand: 7.5”
NEEDLE SIZE
. US 1
CAST-ON
. JSSCO
COLORWORK - Wrist
. Accent color is dominant (carried below)
COLORWORK - Hand
. Off-white is dominant
FLOATS
. I catch mine at a smaller rate - 3 to 4 sts.
. So I won’t catch on 4 sts or smaller. On 5-8 st spans, I’ll catch half way.
. I also have had problems when I tried ‘stacking’ the catches in the same place vertically, so I try to stagger or send them up in a diagonal that flows with the pattern (like up a branch)
. I’m still new to this, so am open to suggestions and learning resources.
FINGER CUFF
. Did not do a transition round of slipping the knits wyib and purling the purls before ribbing, so there is a bit of an arc as it wants to flip. Hoping blocking will smooth that out. Plus doing a less stretchy bind-off.
. US 2 dpn - simple knit bind-off
THUMBS
. p/u 6 sts + 18 held sts = 24 sts
. knit rest of round
. SSK, k2, K2tog, k up to last st
. (k1, p1) rib for 5 rounds
. US 2 dpn - simple knit bind-off
BLOCKING
. Soaked and laid flat to dry
. No bleeding with this yarn
. Blocking definitely helped the curl on the cuffs, but I wonder if it will return on the hand/finger cuff with wear. I think the thumbs and wrists will be fine.
. Relaxed a little width-wise, but not length
DIMENSIONS
. Circumference: 8”
. Length: 9.25”
Mitt #1
. Coffee Grounds: 12.9g
. Off-white: 9.9g
. Worn Denim: 2.5g
Mitt #2
. Coffee Grounds: 13.1g
. Off-white: 10.4g
. Worn Denim: 2.6g
Total
. Coffee Grounds: 26.0g
. Off-white: 20.3g
. Worn Denim: 5.1g
YARN SELECTION
. Madelinetosh 80/10/10 (MCN) - fell in love with the warm gritty browns of Coffee Grounds and have hoarded it in my stash since 2016.
. The OOAK off-white was a disappointment when I first received it because it had looked cleaner in the photo. But now I appreciate the tonality more.
Accent Color
. Tricky because I do not have much more MCN. While the MCN feels thin, my last project with it plumped up after wet blocking. So I’m kinda feeling I should use TML instead.
. Tried leftover Venti Dragon Mocha, using the lighter blob which has brown speckles and white streaks that match the MCN. Turned icy mint next to the Coffee Grounds, which doesn’t excite me.
. Next tried some BFL in a woodsy green mix. It is too varied and blends into the CG, but feels lovely.
. Ah… Perhaps I will crack a full skein, which I normally do not like to do, but I really like the blue leaning green bits in the BFL attempt. So maybe next will be Jasper?
. or Danger Will Robinson ps mini?
. Or perhaps some TMoL? I’m going to sleep on it.
. DWR was too varied with some brown bits that blended in with the CG. But I really liked the lighter blue parts.
. Tried a really old Unicorn Tail. So old, no tag, and I had forgotten what it was and got it wrong! It is Worn Denim!
. While it is similar in tone to the CG, it comes out a sky blue. There is some shading but slight. I think it would pop more if it were a little lighter, but I don’t have quite the right shade. I still think it is pretty.
NEXT TIME
. Remember to pull from center on MCN cakes
. If doing the wrist motif, go a little lighter
. I think the next pair will be without the wrist motif though
. I would also like to do a larger pair
