Notes

Test knit. I tried & tried different ways to use #4 yarn, but the face was coming out huge. I finally gave up & switched to some sport weight yarn & size 4 needles.

I was happily following the pattern until I got to the second instruction for the hat. I knew what she meant from the pictures she provided, but was just having too much trouble with it. So, figuring the intent was to quadruple the number of stitches, I thought I’d do the simple double knitting technique which produces two SS sides. I changed to size 7 needles for the hat brim. I knit the first row, increasing on the ends so I had 40 stitches. Then I started the pattern stitch - knit one, slip one WYIF, every row. Did 2”.

For the scarf, I changed to size 8 needles & K2tog three times on each end after changing to the red yarn, leaving 32 stitches as the reversible textured dishcloth pattern needs a multiple of 4. I wish the red yarn was softer… Decrease each end, one stitch in, on every 8th row when I got to 40” of scarf.

For the eyes, I believe the designer meant pick up and knit the provisional stitches so that the yarn is in the right place to begin the second eye. I did just 2 sections of the pattern because my face is smaller. I used size 3 needles for the eyes & I used size 3 DPNs & a 4 stitch cord for the brow. (In hindsight, I wish I had done it on 3 stitches instead.) It took me awhile to figure out how to do the I-cord BO for the eyes! I finally transferred the eye stitches to the bottom end of the left DPN after I had finished a green I-cord row & knit the last green & the first yellow stitch together. Then I transferred the stitches back to to the right needle & repeated until all eye stitches were used.

I did a 3 stitch I-cord on size 3 DPNs, 8” long, for the mouth. Next time I will place the nose a bit higher.

I used needle & thread to attach the facial features. The yarn is acrylic so it didn’t block very well. I bought some camouflage flannel fabric & backed the face with it.

I can see more of these in my future! Thanks, Tina.
