Notes

I don’t make a lot of stuff in acrylics, but I have plenty of family that doesn’t really care about things like fiber content (gasp!) and would never have clothing they’d have to hand wash (gasp gasp!!!!) so acrylics or Wool Ease or sock yarn is my solution if I want to make things for them. Last summer I made one of these for my dad in the blue/brown Red Heart Soft (Red Heart regular-scratchy was what his mother used for EVERYTHING she knit, which was at least mostly limited to baby blankets and Christmas stockings)(it has its place, for sure, but not my choice for knitting)(anyway). He lives on the desert side of San Diego, so he doesn’t need a ton of warmth, and he said it was just perfect for cool California nights (and he loved the colors, and, to be fair, it WAS super soft and squishy when it came out of the dryer - I was actually pretty impressed).

I’m making another one for a coworker who’s retiring this summer. This time I’m using Lion Brand Heartland in the mixed red. Same kind of deal - someone who wanted a washable/dryable fabric that wasn’t too too warm, so acrylic is again the solution (plus it was a color that matched what she wanted, better than anything else). It’s pretty nice to knit - not as nice as even a wool blend - my own personal prejudice - but I think it will probably also come out of the dryer all soft and squishy, and I think that she will also love it, just like my dad loved his.

I’m a chart knitter, so I made a chart for the pattern. You CO 28, then knit the 18 row repeat until you’ve got enough scarf, then CO. Since it is a free pattern, please help yourself to the chart if it’s useful for you. (The smallest chart that you can make on the online pattern generator is 26 rows long, so I marked where the pattern ends with X’s for “no stitch”.)
