Our lovely colleague Cath is having a baby and as a member of the BSOC (baby shower organising committee) I felt it was important to contribute a handknit to this enterprise. She doesn’t know the gender of her little bundle of joy (“I’m having a surprise”) so I found some leftover Mayhem and Chaos (from Joh’s 80s legwarmers: link text )and decided that purple and green were both cheerful and gender-neutral.

I used a sort-of version of Stephanie Pearl McPhee’s rolled-brim hat and cast on 74 stitches, increasing to 80 after about two centimetres. I knitted for about 14cm and then decreased (more or less) evenly till I got bored and finished it off.

I quite like this jaunty cap - do you think I could get away with one in my size?
