I quite like this sock construction and the socks fit well. These are meant for me to sleep in during SoCal winters, where the days can be warm but the night temps can drop to near freezing.
- Standard Toe (1st/left sock), Directional Toe (à la Interweave, 2nd/right sock)
- Master Reinforced Heel
- Leg: 3x1 rib for 4.5”
- Cuff: 1x1 twisted rib for 11 rows
- Bind-off: sewn, in 1x1 rib
My foot measurements are slightly different from what they were 11 years ago, when I wrote up my original A-J numbers. My feet seem to have shrunk a little in circumference since then.
My A (gauge): 10 stitches per inch. Table 1 only goes up to 9.5 stitches per inch so I had to use the numbers from the next row down.
Yarn: I decided to not match the striping on both socks. It turned out to be the less stressful choice in the end, because the striping sequence in the second ball was the reverse of the first…
What I learned: Each sock has a different toe. Left sock has a wider toe, 20x2 cast on. It looks a little funny, but it’s comfortable and I can spread my toes. Right sock has a fitted toe, 13x2 cast on. It looks great, but my toes feel more constricted. I’m going to stick with wider, less attractive toes in future socks.
I also noticed that on Left sock (2nd photo), the top corners of the heel pull down the first few rows of the leg stitches. So on Right sock (top photo), I tried adding a small 5-stitch short row at those corners when I started the leg rows. I’m not 100% sure I like how it looks, but at least there’s less stress/pull in those corners.
