I have no idea what type of yarn this is, how many yards, what weight… nothing. It’s variegated. A friend was cleaning stash.
I am going to see if I have enough to make a child’s cardigan as a Xmas present.
This pattern is size 4-6. (No way is this large enough for a 6 year old.)
Here goes!
This is my 2nd try at this pattern.
1 - There is no target size. Sure there is a gauge but what good is it if you have no idea what the final size is beyond “child 4-6”? No length or width measurements in the pattern at all (except for gauge).
2 - Designer is a VERY loose crocheter. Her stitches are super tall.
Gauge
My gauge is shorter than hers because I don’t yank my stitches up. I noticed others have commented about their stitches being shorter, too. I don’t think it matters because the stitch pattern is simple enough that you can add the pattern repeat (2 rows), as you like.
I have no idea if the size I am making is the right size for a 4 year old or not. I will have to go out on the internet and see if I can find some measurements.
I found measurements for size 4 but there are several sets of them. Very confusing!
Yarn
Since I don’t know how much yarn I have, I don’t intend to add fringe. At least not at this stage. I am hoping to have enough just to make the cardigan. I figure if I don’t, I can use another solid color yarn as a trim or something.
Starting Over
The website calls for a Size I hook (5.5 mm). But when I got to the armhole, it just looks so small. I checked the pattern page and it says Size J hook (6 mm). I am going to start over with the J hook.
The sizing is working better with the larger hook. Once again, I am at Row 13.
Sleeve
I worked 4 pattern repeats. I ran out of yarn. At least I got short sleeves on the cardigan.
It sure seems small for a size 4. But the measurements are good.
Finishing
I did get the last row of sc on the ends of the sleeves. I had just enough left to add a last row of “sc, hdc” across the bottom hem.
Dimensions
armhole - 4.5 in
chest - 23 in
under arm to hem - 9.5 in
Note - If this ends up being too small for the 3 year old, she has a baby sister who is 1. So, it will work for at least one of them!
I am just going to give this to the younger sister. The mom lets the older sister take whatever she wants from the younger sister but not the other way around. So best to give the gift to the younger!
If I remember, maybe I can get some pictures of it being worn. For sure, the mother is going to love the colors of this yarn.
Note about size
I tried this little sweater on my 3 year old granddaughter (who is a healthy weight for her age). She is not tall or small or skinny or plump. She is just normal size. The sweater was definitely too small. I was pretty sure it would be.
I cannot imagine this sweater size fitting a 6 year old! I followed the pattern for 4-6 years.
The sizing in this pattern is non-existent. It’s too bad because I think it would be a fun little sweater for a girl. The length was fine on the 3 year old but the width, which was where my gauge was fine - was just too small in the arms and chest.
My granddaughter was NOT impressed.
I am thinking about tossing this into the thrift store box.
