Well, the 5th pattern I am going to try for this yarn. This time, I am trying a fingering weight pattern. This pattern calls for 2541 yards for a small. You are supposed to make it oversize.
But from what I can tell, even a small would be oversize for my daughter who I want to make a size medium.
Next problem is that the pattern calls for a 3 mm hook. AGAIN, I do not have this size in any of my US sets of crochet hooks. I have a 2.75 (C) hook and a 3.25 (D) hook.
We will see what works as this yarn is labeled sport but is not working for any of the sport weight patterns I have tried. It is too thin.
Gauge
I haven’t worked quite enough rows or stitches to really measure gauge. I think I am close though.
Row 1 measured 7 inches across. This is the Right shoulder. The schematic at the end of the pattern, says it should be 6.5 inches wide at the shoulder.
The instructions for the special stitch whdc2tog could use a photo as it’s a bit tricky.
I end with a sc in the sl stitch and then the whdc2tog works under this sc and then into the unworked stitch of the row that comes after the short row. At least, that is how I am working it. The whdc2tog appears to me to be the transition stitch from the end of the short row onto Row 1.
I am doing something wrong. I think this might be a stitch that decreases. At Row 10, I was exactly 4 stitches too many, the number of whdc2tog.
Comments on whdc2tog - Nope, this is not a decrease stitch. It only takes up the space of one stitch because it works into the “previous” stitch by starting directly under the last sc worked. I worked my stitch as a hdc/sc2tog in the indicated stitches. I liked this better because it wasn’t as bulky looking.
Frogged and starting over to get the right stitch counts.
1st try - Row 10 = 50 stitches
2nd try - Row 10 = 48 stitches
Goal - Row 10 = 46 stitches
Gauge goal for shoulder width
small 6.5 inches
medium 7.5 inches
mine = 7 inches
Right Shoulder (orange markers)
I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I have counted stitches until I am blue in the face. Whatever I am doing wrong, I have to do the exact same thing for all 4 shoulders.
Technically, there is no visual difference. This section of the pattern is all hdc.
Solution - From Rows 11-15, I only did 1 increase on Row 13. So, I have the target 49 stitches on Row 15.
Left Shoulder (blue markers)
Doing the exact same thing. The same counts until Row 10 and I get Row 10 = 46 stitches. Yeah!
Solution - Work Rows 11-15 normally. Row 15 = 49 stitches.
This pattern has some stretches of instructions that are a bit sparse. Definitely not a beginner pattern.
Front
When working the chain that goes across the front, to join the shoulder pieces, make sure you don’t twist it. I marked each of my shoulder pieces with a different color marker.
Row 18 was hard to get the stitches correctly places. The hook is small, the yarn fine and splitty. I finally marked each section of 4 stitches and was able to work my way across accurately. This row is important that you get it correct.
Row 19 - 24 inches across. Goal - 21 inches across the front. I figure it should pull in a bit more as I work the cable pattern.
This sweater is going to take awhile. The hdc stitches, on a fine yarn, with a small hook, are fiddly. But I think it will be worth it, in the end.
Frogged
Row 21 - 24 in width.
This is size large width. It seems that my width has increased and I have no way of making it smaller unless I decrease stitches on each side. Not sure how this would look.
Frustrated with the size. This sweater is a lot of work and I would proceed if the sizing worked. I am going to lose yarn because of the fasten off on the shoulder.
I am just not willing to put in this much work if the size is not correct. Frogging and reclaiming what I can of the expensive yarn.
