I need to use up old yarn that I don’t want to make into anything. This looks like a great way to do that.
I am using a bin of cotton craft yarn. I have some large partial and full skeins and lots of full and partial little skeins. I don’t think I can use up all of the yarn in this rug. lol … Maybe I will get two rugs out of this bin? Anyway, the idea is to empty the bin and have rugs when I am done.
I do think that cotton craft yarn makes great rugs. They hold their shape well and wash up nicely in the washing machine.
Going through my stash, I have a BUNCH of unlabeled partial balls of cotton craft yarn. I am going to start with those and just list them here to make sense of them.
The idea is to go through the partial balls first and mix the colors.
I am using a large skein as a base to mix the other colors. It is a dark pink/cream tweed look cotton craft yarn.
Side note - I purchased this stuff years ago because I thought I could make wash cloths, kitchen dish rags, etc with it. I hated this stuff. It looks great when you first make it but it doesn’t hold up well because you wash it so often. Rugs are not washed as much and so it’s better for rug use.
I used the P hook (11.5 mm) for the foundation chain, then switched to an N hook (10mm) for the stitches. The P hook for the stitches was too loose and flimsy.

So, I have worked through all of my miscellaneous cotton balls of yarn. Whew!
At 30 inches, I started working around the outside of the rug in a circle to create a border. I did this for a couple of reasons. The yarn colors were changing and I thought it would transition better as a border. Plus, this should help the rug to hold it’s shape.
4 border rounds - using linen stitch, corners sc, ch2, sc
Leftovers
2 small partial balls of yellow
2 large partial skeins of pink
I used a total of 38 miscellaneous skeins and balls of cotton yarn. Only 4 left when the project was finished.
Estimating total yardage
450 yards from full skein entered into the project and how much I used multiplied by 5 strands = 2250 yards
Dimensions
