Notes

This is an unlabeled, OLD ball of green thread. I am sure there is more than enough to make this doily. The thread is a #10 weight and the pattern call for #20 or #30 weight. But that’s okay. It’s a small doily and this thread should work just fine.

I am using a #8 (1.5 mm) hook.

I love Elizabeth Hiddleson’s patterns! There is always a photo which serves as your chart.

Round 3 error perpetuating
It says to follow Round 2 until the * which you do and then in Round 3 it says some stuff that is completely wrong. And then from Round 4 on, it says “As Round 3 to **.

R2 - ch 4, make 6 tr, ch 4, and (up to *)

R3 - make 2 tr, ch 4 and tr in corner loop, tr in next tr (up to **)

This translates to ch 4 (first tr of round in corner tr), (6 tr, ch 4, 2 tr, ch 4, tr) in ch 4 sp (the corner loop) then tr in next corner tr.

You can see this makes no sense for the corner shell. This is the error that is perpetuated.

Starting with Round 3, the photo clearly has “3 tr, ch 4, 3 tr” in the ch 4 sp. The tr’s on each end are in the corner tr of the row below and not in the ch space.

This error perpetuates through the doily whenever it says “as Round 3”.

It is then referred to as the Corner Shell

The Corner Shell should be worked as:
tr in corner tr, (3 tr, ch 4, 3 tr) in ch 4 sp, tr in corner tr.

Round 8 error
On section where you are starting the scallop

ch 11, sc in 9th ch from hook, ch 2, sk 6 tr

It should say sk 5 tr.

Round 10
Scallop section is a little confusing unless you look hard at the photo. I am going to simplify it for myself.

Ladder stitch = ch 12, tr in 10th, 11th, 12th ch from hook, tr in side top of starting tr.

ch 3, (tr, ladder st, tr) in scallop (ch 3 sp of scallops)
ladder st, tr in next scallop - 2 times
ladder st, tr in same scallop as last tr
(tr, ladder st, tr) in next scallop
ladder st, tr in next scallop - 2 times
ladder st, tr in same scallop as last tr,

Round 14
On the scallop side it says “make shell in shell” but there is no description of this particular shell. I believe you just repeat the type of shell in Round 12. I think of them as “long shells”.

Long Shell - (3 dtr, ch 3, 3 dtr) in ch sp of shell below.

Round 15
It says to fasten off at end of the round and then refasten exactly where you fastened off. Hmmm..

I did not fasten off at the end of Round 15. I turned and started Round 16.

Round 16
I finished the first scalloped end and fastened off as instructed. Started on the other scalloped end and followed instructions.

Round 17

shell as side shells in shell on end

The pattern says this after you have worked one side and are on the scalloped end. I believe it means to continue to work the shells the same as you did on the previous side.

shell - (4tr, ch 3, 4 tr) in indicated space

Round 18
I changed just a bit to add beads and keep the look of the 3 loops (like a flower) in the pattern.

For the loops in the center of the shell spaces I did:
sc, ch 1, bead, ch 1, sc
ch 2, bead, ch 2, sc
ch 1, bead, ch 1, sc

Beads - 8/0 seed beads, Vintage Venetian, opaque, green yellow #2

Dimensions
pre-block
length - 17 in
width - 11 in

post block (soft block)
length - 17 in
width - 11 in

I am in the middle of moving. Technically “post block” is going to be “post iron”. I don’t know where my blocking mats are at the moment.

With #30 weight thread, the doily is supposed to be 9x13 inches. No hook size was given. Mine is bigger because I used #10 weight thread.
