Going with my theme of using up old yarn!
This is a pretty yarn that I used on some project, a long time ago. I think I have enough for a cat bed.
The unlabeled cone was ruined and is stained. But I have so much of it, I was always hoping to find a way to fix the yarn. I have discovered that it makes a great filler for things like baskets and rugs. Or just combined with other yarns. You can’t see the stained issue.
In this pattern, it should help stiffen up the bed. It’s not a soft yarn, it’s rather stiff.
I am holding 2 strands of Stardust and 1 of the boucle. Added 1 strand of worsted cotton, to thicken it.
This is not as bulky as the pattern calls for, but it should work.
Despite my holding 2 strands of aran, 1 of worsted cotton and one of fingering/sport weight = 4 strands together, it’s just not as bulky as super bulky weight yarn. I can tell by looking at the pictures.
Gauge
My gauge is first 4 rounds = 4 inches. Yep, a lot smaller. I did notice that a LOT of the other projects made the bed larger to fit their cats.
Mine is rippling a lot even though I have followed the pattern exactly. This bothers me. I want the base to lay flat.
Round 10
I followed the instructions for increasing and doing the last round for the base. But on my Round 10 (first round of wall), I didn’t do more increases. I wanted a wall that stood up straighter not more ripples in the base.
I learned on another basket project to do a round of blo stitches for the first wall round. This is a really neat trick for a basket. So, my Round 10(ish) was blohdc with no increases. Other than that, I followed the instructions for turning.
2nd Round of Wall
Added 2 old cotton cones of yarn to help thicken the wall, so it would stand better. I am guessing at the weights of the yarns on cones. I don’t really know yardage or weight. They are very old cones, you can tell by how old the labels look - when there are labels.
Done
I went with a 10” base because beyond that, it just got too ripply. Even though it’s a bit floppy, I think it is fine for a cat bed. It would not work for a basket, but I think if it’s the right size for my daughter’s cats, they will like it.
