Steeking without a sewing machine
With this small cardi I try to show cutting up the seams without a sewing machine works fine if you use a sticky wool like Raumgarn Finull (or any other kind of wool which are not blends of Alpaca, cotton, bambu, merino, cashmere, nylon, tencel, or not Superwash-treated). They have done that on Shetland as in forever so I suppose they know what they are doing. I have only used this method for 3-4 years but it works fine with my knitted garments, both for children and grown ups, and for blankets. Or for anything you want to use your scissors in.

In this baby jacket I made a frontal steek, a steek for both sleeves, and for shaping the front and back at the top (all in all 5 steeks). I did this so I could knit this stranded garment in the round, not back and forth with two colours ever. I used a 2-needle bind off at the top of each shoulder, and left some yarn for sewing down the cut shaping steeks at the neck. Those two steeks were the first I cut.

I knit the body and two sleeves. Before any cutting was done I picked up stitches for the button band and neck band (I did that in one go in this cardigan, I usually make them separately). Before cutting the steek for either sleeve hole I sew on the sleeve, from the front, by hand.

After cutting the shaping steeks and sewing down them on the wrong side, I cut the button band steek, and sew down them on the WS as over, see picture with black thread. I use rather long stitches, I just want to hold the steek down, the wool do the rest.
Then I cut the sleeves steeks, from inside the body. Again, just lightly olding down the cut edge with long stitches.

I usually soak my garments at this point but as the wool created small “sausages” around the openings I didn’t like (a mix of size and yarn, I think) I steamed this this time.

Siden mars 2015 er måneden jeg enten skal strikke ting ferdig, eller rekke opp, blei det til at nå skal denne til pers.
Ferdig med bolen.
Snart ferdig med første erme.

Nesten alt er klipt opp, mars 18., nesten alt er sydd fast, nesten alt bortsett fra 1 omg med svart rundt knappekantene fordi jeg mangler svart Finull (1 omg!) og selve knappene.
Og så skal den vaskes selvfølgelig, den er rimelig stiv akkurat nå.
