Notes

My first completed double knitting project! Hurray!

Part of the popular pattern “Nightingale” is available for free in “Birds Chart” (linked above).

I used a two color Italian cast on, but if I make another scarf I’ll choose a different one. The bind off is the one shown in this video, and it’s a much more attractive edge. If I make another one, I’m going for that look on both sides.

I cast on 37 stitches (of each color, alternating my two yarns for double knitting) and went four rows before starting on the flower, then followed the two-bird chart for a while before deciding to throw in a different pattern with one bird and changing directions. All three patterns were found for free in the same book in the antique pattern library. If you check out the pattern linked at the top of the page, you’ll find all of them in the same PDF.

They’re intended for filet crochet, but worked just fine as knitting patterns. The single bird was the only one that didn’t actually have a chart, but the finished filet crochet piece pictured was close enough.

I experimented a little here or there to see how certain spots looked plus or minus a few contrast stitches.
