First block, lower left corner

  1. Cast on 44 sts in black
  2. Slip first stitch, Knit 21, M1, K21, K1 thru back loop
  3. Slip first stitch, Knit 20, slip 2 sts knit wise, k1, psso, K20, K1 thru back loop
  4. Slip first stitch, Knit until 1 stitch remains, K1 thru back loop
  5. Repeat row 3 and 4 in black
  6. Switch to color and knit rows 3 and 4 until 1 st remains, then cut yarn and pull needle until waste yarn slips thru the last loop to secure

Add block to the right of an established block

  1. Using black, cast on 22 sts, pick up 22 sts from the bottom right to the top right of an established block
  2. K 22, m1, K22 Repeat rows 3 thru 6 above

Adding a block above an established block

  1. Pick up 22 sts from the top right corner to the top left corner of an established block, cast on 22 sts
  2. K 22, m1, K22 Repeat rows 3 thru 6 above

Adding a horizontal mitered rectangle

  1. You need to knit across the top of two squares for this. Starting at the far right side of the two squares, pick up 23 sts on the first square and 22 sts across the top of the second square.
  2. Now to turn the corner, you will either cast on 22 sts if you are adding to the top with no other block to attach to or you will pick up along the right side edge of the block from bottom to top. 3 K22, m1, K45
  3. Repeat rows 3 thru 6 above
