I was able to do it! It took me longer than i wanted so now it is a late bday gift but i <3 it. I uploaded the chart i made for the upper part of the hat.
I sewed button eyes and a beak on one owl as an accent. :)

Written directions for leaf chart (repeat rounds of 11):
For rounds 2 and 6 the first and last cable overlaps with another repeat. On these rounds there will be some interesting dances at the beginning / end of the round. Decide how you want to deal with them and be consistent.
Round 1: C2R, p4, C2L, p3
Round 2: (1/2 C2R), p6, C2L, p1, (1/2 C2R)
Round 3: p8, C3L
Round 4: p8, k3
Round 5: p7, C2R, C2L
Round: (1/2 C2L), p5, C2R, k2, (1/2 C2L)
Round 7: C2L, p3, C2R, yo, k2tog, ssk, yo
Round 8: k1, C2L, p1, C2R, k5
Round 9: k3, p1, k3, yo, k2tog, ssk, yo
On next round move beginning of round over by 4 stitches so that the last stitch in round 9 is a single purl stitch.
