MATERIALS
• About 300 yards worsted weight (#4 medium) cotton yarn (from 2 skeins: 2 strands held together) or about 540 yards fingering weight cotton yarn (from 4 skeins: 4 strands held together)
• Size J (6mm) crochet hook if using 4 strands of fingering; Size K (6.5mm) hook if using worsted
• 5 locking stitch markers
• Tapestry needle

• ch1 = chain 1

GAUGE: J hook 3 sc & 3.5 rows OR K hook 3 sc & 3 rows = 1 inch

ROW 2: Ch1, 2 sc in same st and each st around, join with slst in top of first sc. (14 sts)

ROW 3: Ch1, 2 sc in same st and each st around, do not join. Mark last st. (28 sts)

ROW 4 TO 16: Working in the round, 10 scfl, 2 scbl, 2 scfl, 10 scbl, 2 scfl, 2 scbl. Keep track easily by marking the front loop of the first and last st of the 10 scfl group, and the back loop of the first and last st of the 10 scbl group. Rep from * to * 12x for a total of 13 rounds (13 visible ridges). (For size 9/10 add 2 more rows, 15 visible ridges.) (28 sts)

ROW 17 to 25: Working in rows, turn (do not ch1) and work on just 18 sts, the sole, taking care not to skip first sc. 18 sc, turn. Remove stitch markers along the way but leave remaining 2 markers. Rep from * to * 8x for a total of 9 rows (4 1/2 fat stripes). (18 sts)

ROW 26: 6 sc, sc2tog, 2 sc, sc2tog, 6 sc, turn. (16 sts)

ROW 27: 5 sc, sc2tog 3x, 5 sc, turn. (13 sts)

ROW 28: 4 sc, sc2tog, sc, sc2tog, 4sc. (11 sts)

ROW 29: CUFF: Widen loop on hook slightly, remove hook, fold heel in half lengthwise, insert hook into stitch on opposite side of heel, grab loop and pull through, ch1. Working in the round, sc all around opening of slipper until center of heel. (about 30 sts)

ROW 30: Scbl in each st around except sc2togbl in each corner where top of slipper meets sides (marked sts), and sc2togbl, scbl, sc2togbl in the 5 sts around heel.

ROW 31: Scbl in each st around except sc2togbl in each corner where top of slipper meets sides. Slst to join at center of heel. Leaving 8 inches of tail, cut yarn and fasten off.

Turn slipper inside-out and use tapestry needle and tail of yarn to stitch the gap in the heel. Weave in ends.
