Notes
  1. Make button: Using WHITE, ch 2. Sc 3 in 2nd ch from hook (3 sts). Fasten off, leaving about 3-inch tail. Set button aside.
  2. Row 1: Using WHITE, ch 20, join with sl st to 1st ch (creates a loop for hanging). Ch 2. 6sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sl st to 1st sc. (6 sc)
  3. Row 2: Ch 1, 2sc in same st and each st around. Sl st to 1st sc. (12 sts)
  4. Row 3: Ch 1. 2sc in same st, sc in next 3 sts. (2sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts) repeat around. Sl st to 1st sc. (15 sts)
  5. Row 4: Ch 1. Sc in same st and each st around. Sl st to 1st sc. (15 sts)
  6. Row 5: Switch to BLACK. Ch 1. Sc in same st and each st around. Sl st to 1st sc. (15 sts)
  7. Row 6: Switch to RED. Ch 1. Sc in same st and each st around. Sl st to 1st sc. (15 sts)
  8. Row 7: Ch 1. Sc in same st, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog. (Sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog) Repeat around. Sl st to 1st sc. (12 sts)
  9. Row 8: Ch 1. Sc2tog drawing together same and next st. Sc2tog around. Sl st to 1st sc2tog . (6 sts) Finish button: using an arm’s lengths of BLACK and a tapestry needle, sew edging onto button. Position button over ugly spot of sl sts on ball, and pull the button’s tails through into ball. Continue using BLACK around edges of button to sew button onto ball. Fasten off and tie tail to other tails inside ball; trim excess. Stuff: draw up hanging-loop through center of ball and out the top, and add stuffing around loop keeping it centered, like potting a plant. Continue adding stuffing as needed while finishing ball.
  10. Row 9: Ch 1. Sc2tog drawing together same and next st. Sc2tog around. Sl st to 1st sc2tog . (3 sts)
  11. Fasten off, leaving a few inches of tail, and use tapestry needle to sew top of ball closed around hanging-loop. Push needle through center of ball and out the bottom, cut yarn, and let end disappear inside ball.
