Sizing on this cardigan is wacky. There are 5 sizes in 2’’ increments, meant to fit babies 3m to 24m, with the largest size to fit a chest of 26’’ (for an 18-24m) with 4’’ of ease, for a total circumference of 30’’. The average 2 year old has a 20-21’’ chest, not 26’’. So I am going for the middle size, and should end up with about 24-25’’, which is still plenty generous. The lengths of the body and sleeve look about right, so will knit to those lengths.
Because I’m knitting the middle size, I can work 12 repeats of the cable pattern in one piece for both fronts and the back at the same time. It looks like the moss stitch is timed to hit at the underarm, so I will separate the fronts from the back at the time it’s time to start the moss stitch.
I will knit the moss stitch sleeves top down by PU sts around the armholes, rather than knitting bottom up flat.
Changing the ribbing pattern so that it flows better into the cable pattern. Rather than k2p2, I’m working a 15 st rep under the 15 st cable panel that aligns with the columns of purls in the cable: p1, k2, p2, k2tbl, p1, k2tbl, p2, k2, p1. The two ktbl sts will line up under the base of the 2/2 cables, with the single center purl column running up into the center of the cable panel. I also added a column of stockinette on each of the front opening selvedges for picking up the front bands.
