Columbia Knitting Manual Vol. 109, published 1947. Pattern: No. 915 Infant’s Knee Socks

Modified to knit ITR. Worked 2x2 ribbing with k1 at BOR/EOR to center. Worked garter stitch panel and leg decreases before EOR, then at BOR.

Leg shaping was supposed to be every 9th rnd with a total of 6 dec rnds, and 4 rnds even following final dec; but the leg looked like it would be too long, so after 5th dec, I worked 3 rnds, and then worked final dec in 4th rnd. Gives the back of leg 4’’ of length (not including 2x2 ribbing, which is over the knee). Pattern did not indicate row gauge or length, so I based it on length of bootee foot matching length of back of leg in pattern photo.

For foot, entire round was garter st, so there is a jog at the back of the heel. Transition from pink to white at EOR puts those sts in st st for one row, but it’s hidden by the strap that is worked later. After final rnd of foot, worked an additional 1/2 rnd and dec center st tog with last st. Grafted P off, K on for both halves to maintain st patt continuity

For strap, instructions say to CO 12, PU 14 along side of foot, another 14 along side of other half, then CO 12. Needed to use a single-strand CO, so chose left-leaning half-hitch (backwards loop over forefinger) and CO 10. PU through upper bump of top garter ridge, then CO 10. As I worked across the half-hitch CO, worked m1 left twice to deal with excess slack while achieving 12 sts.
