I wanted a shawl the size and shape of Colour Affection but in one colour, so I used 4 different textures instead of 3 colours in garter stitch.
I’m extremely pleased with the result.
I’ve had some requests on Rav and in real life to explain what I did. You need to buy the Colour Affection pattern, but here’s how I adapted it.
Throughout: I increased where specified in the original pattern, but used KFB instead of M1 increases.
Section 1 (single colour section in the pattern): work the following 4-row repeat
Row 1: K
Row 2: P
Row 3: K
Row 4: K
That gives you 1 garter ridge for every 3 rows of stocking stitch.
Section 2 (2-colour section in the pattern): work the following 8-row repeat
Row 1: K
Row 2: K
Row 3: YO, K2TOG to end
Row 4: K
Row 5: K
Row 6: P
Row 7: K
Row 8: P
This gives you a bands of garter stitch with eyelets separated by stocking stitch.
Section 3 (3-colour section in the pattern): work the following 4-row repeat
Row 1: P
Row 2: K
Row 3: K
Row 4: P
This results in horizontal st st / rev st st ribs.
NB you might want to pick up the wraps on the short rows, as they unlike in Colour Affection, they won’t be hidden by garter stitch.
Edging
Work in stocking stitch with a small bobble every 8th stitch, with 4 rows of st st between the bobble rows. I staggered my bobbles but you could line them up if you felt so inclined. To make the bobble:
KFB, KFB, K into the same stitch, thereby making 5 stitches in one. Then use the tip of the left needle to pull the 4 extra stitches over the last, to decrease back to 1 from 5. This gives you a small, neat bobble. I worked 4 bobble rows in total.
Lastly, I went up a needle size and worked an i-cord bind off.
None of it would have been possible without the original and beautiful Colour Affection pattern. Thank you Veera!
