Using the first 6 colours (in the order listed above).
I’m doing my squares slightly differently - with dc, 2ch,dc in each corner. It’s cheating slightly (shh), but seems to give good squares. Should note that my squares are made with dc, as the htr looked wrong with my gauge. Final row of each square is dc,htr, htr,dc to help with assembly.
Plan of action: make 21 of the smallest square, then put one aside. Add the next colour to the remaining squares, and put one aside. Continue until all squares are done.
I turn the piece when I start a new row, to reduce to chance of it looking like spirals, rather than squares. This also gives a nice ridge pattern every two rows. The yarn is cut and restarted a quarter-turn around every two or three rows (or when the colour changes) to even out any end-of-row lumpiness.
Little picture is a diagram showing numbers of stitches of each colour (note - colours in chart are not a perfect match to yarn) in order, starting from the LHS. So the thin sliver of light blue on the far left of the diagram represents the 21 2x2 squares and the navy on the right is the last wodge on the final, biggest square. Second royal blue and third light blue chunks will be the slowest.
Phew! Big wodge of light blue now done! Those rows (20 - 24 nine times) took over a ball of wool. So I’m over halfway through…
Project on hold for a bit - broke a finger (little one left hand), so my tension is a bit off. Will come back to this one in the summer…
Ok, I’m back and raring to go! I even sorted out loads of ends!
Each row is starting to get rather long.
Final square done, now to join them together…
I’m using the denim yarn to crochet squares together. I’ll probably use it for a border too as it’s the most middly of the colours.
Squares all joined! Now for a border. 4 rows of dc’s all round, plus a row of crab stitch to finish it off. One side has a ridge made of dc’s between each square, the other side is flush, with a more subtle-looking join. Two looks for the price of one!
Blanket all washed. Once it’s dry, I’ll trim the ends.
Done!
This blanket really shouldn’t have taken a year and a half, but once projects become too big for the bus they tend to linger a bit.
Final size approx 1.6m x 1.6m
