Notes

Named for the Madeira lace pattern that borders the bottom of this wrap, the Madeira Islands Shawl has long ends and a beautiful drape to wrap around your neck a few times, if you’d like. Madeira is a traditional Spanish lace pattern that is updated with a symmetrical eyelet pattern on the body of the wrap.

Knitting this shawl begins at the bottom. You will repeat the lace pattern according to the written or charted directions, thus forming the bottom border of the shawl. With the full width of border stitches on the needle, you will then begin near the center with short rows, lengthening each row until all stitches from the border are knitted. You’ll end with a 4-row garter stitch at the top.

Directions are given row by row to facilitate the correct number of stitches for each short row. You’ll know exactly where you are and you’ll be able to confirm you’re on the right track after every row. No winging it here!

Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light is smooth and soft, great for draping around your neck a few times or hanging down your sides. Feel free to use any light yarn, though. It’s your project, after all!
