BBK is generously and graciously allowing us to use her pattern as a question thread training aid.
The link to the pattern itself is in the Sock Madness Information thread.
Corrections:
- the instructions for the transition to the minigusset for size medium should read k1, CDD, k1, yo, (k6, CDD, k1, yo)twice, k5, yo, k1, CDD, k1
Somehow the dropbox version has all the sizes reversed at the end of the minigusset. (Page 3) It should read:
Repeat rounds 2-3 until 58 (66, 76) stitches remain.
31 (35, 41) instep sts/27 (31, 35) sole sts
Clarifications:
How to do the heel if you aren’t doing a mini-gusset:
if you don’t actually knit the mini gusset, you would skip the 2nd half and go straight to the foot.
without mini gusset : mini gusset transition --> swsrh --> foot
with a mini gusset: mini gusset transition --> first half of mini gusset to increase sts --> swsrh --> 2nd half of mini gusset to decrease st count --> foot
Repeat rounds 2-3 until 58 (66, 76) stitches remain.
31 (35, 41) instep sts/27 (31, 35) sole sts

I went to the SuperBowl sale at my LYS, and this yarn followed me home. I was thinking “baby hats”, because I can get as many as 4 newborn hats from one of these skeins.
Then the pattern became available in the drop box, and my fingers itched to make those bobbled cuffs -- in this beautiful sea-colored self-striping yarn! Even though I had two other projects, both Olympic KALs, to knit this month, I found I could not stop myself.

I cast on at Craft-n-Chat, and, after about 3 false starts, I had finished the bobbles and cuff, and started the leg. My one regret is that the bobble fell in the dark green stripe of this yarn, so it is hard to see them clearly. Note to self: start the second sock so that the bobbles will be light-to-mid blue.

After work, I knit 1/2 of the leg, finishing the second repeat before I went to bed.

I love these socks, and I’m pretty sure that Katherine will, too. She wants wool socks. MORE wool socks, and I am happy to oblige. But as for knitting them now? I had set them aside to work on some KAL’s. And then the qualifying socks for Sock Madness dropped, and I have done nothing but knit bright orange socks.
I will get back to these socks. I have named my project page “Under the Sea” in honor of the colorway. And I have edited my Finish by date to a more realistically possible date for completion.

These socks are still on hold, just before the heel. I think I will RIP and restart using smaller needles, and a more felicitous color placement for that round of bobbles. So, these are officially in a UFO status, I think.

The needles are too large for the socks, and the socks are too large for someone Katherine’s size. Frogged tonight, may try again next year.
