I am on a stashbusting exercise to make some space in my yarn storage
My ambition with these granny squares is to use up my partial balls of the more colourful #stylecraft Special DK in my stash. I had a sort through, I was amazed how many I have accumulated over the years. I reckon I can make every single square unique.
In order to have a unifying theme, they’ll be joined with another row of all the same colour (black) to make a blanket. I only have two small balls of black … the conversation with my other half was hilarious.
“You’re on a mission to make some space in your yarn boxes …” I nod happily.
“And the way to do that … um …” there’s a slight shake of his head as he processes it “… is to buy MORE yarn?!”
I’m NOT mad, it makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? He had an amused but indulgent grin on his face as off I went to buy it.
He loves me and my hobbies, he’s wonderful

I’ve joined up all the granny squares I’ve made so far. Black is really unifying the weird colour combinations that stashbusting thrusts upon me.
I first saw a blanket like this in a holiday cottage we rented in Craster, Northumberland back in 2010 (annoyingly, I can’t find the photos at the moment). Further inspiration is provided by a similar blanket which features in the cult gothic soap opera Dark Shadows in the 1960s which I’m watching. It pops up in various locations.
It may or may not stay in the shape of a heart, I’ve a few ideas for developing this blanket further but in the meantime, Happy Valentine’s Day to anyone who celebrates it (we don’t in our house).

I finished squaring the blanket up last night. I ran out of black, I only needed 4g to finish! I got another ball posted by Julie from the Wool Zone. No more yarn shop visiting due to coronavirus. How the world has changed in the last few weeks.
The border is next.

A traditional granny square blanket but with the heart in the middle picked out with half-motif triangles.
It’s kind of a half and half stash busting hybrid. All the coloured yarn is from my stash but the black has been bought from The Wool Zone in-store before lockdown and mail order afterwards. Another WIP finished!
